Gray letters disappear from your memory faster than you think. Keep a quick note — keyboard highlights in the official game help, and a side scribble helps even more when duplicate logic gets messy. Reusing a known gray is the most common “I knew that” mistake.
Guess two should earn its keep
If guess one taught you almost nothing, guess two should introduce new common letters, not rearrange the same failure. If guess one already gave greens and yellows, guess two should advance those constraints — move yellows, protect greens, and add one or two untested high-value letters when you can.

Let unusual letters in when the board forces them
Players hate starting with uncommon letters. Fine for openers. Late game, if greens and yellows point at an awkward pattern, stop fighting it. The word does not care that Q or J feels rare.
Separate lookalikes by the differing letter first
When two candidates share four letters, do not hope. Identify the slot that differs and build a guess that tests it. If both words remain possible, use the solver or word finder to stop inventing ghosts.
Watch for duplicate-letter traps

Use hints progressively, not as a dump

Archive checks are a late-game tool
Before you burn guess six between two options, check used Wordle words or skim past answers. Archives can lag, and long-term reuse is possible, so treat a miss as “not in our archive yet,” not absolute law.

Quick checklist before you submit
- Does this guess reuse a known gray for no reason?
- Are all greens still in place?
- Did every yellow move to a new slot?
- If this fails, will I learn something that splits the remaining candidates?
