What hard mode changes
In normal Wordle, you can spend a middle guess testing unused letters even if that probe word cannot be the answer. Hard mode forbids that once information is on the board. Any green letter must remain in its known position. Any yellow letter must be included somewhere in the next guess.
The tile colors themselves do not change. The constraint on what you are allowed to type does.
Why people turn it on
Hard mode feels stricter and, to many players, more honest: you cannot soft-cheat information with throwaway probes. It also creates new failure modes. A rare green locked early can force awkward legal guesses that burn your remaining attempts without clearing the shortlist.
Strategy adjustments that actually matter
- Choose flexible openers. Prefer starting words that leave multiple strong, legal follow-ups. See starting words.
- Be careful with rare greens. Confirming an uncommon letter early can trap the rest of the word under hard-mode rules.
- Plan for duplicates. Hard mode plus a double letter is a classic streak-ender. Read duplicate letters before you assume five unique tiles.
- Endgame discipline rises. You often cannot play a pure “distinguisher” probe. Your distinguishing guess usually must still be a legal candidate word.
